Welcome to the home of the Potomac Vintage Riders

The Potomac Vintage Riders motorcycle club was formed in the fall of 1999 by a group of local enthusiasts in the Washington, DC area. We are an AMA sanctioned and AHRMA affiliated motorcycle club.

PVR is a versatile group with its members involved in all forms of vintage motorcycling, including motocross, cross-country, dirt track, observed trials, road-race or just-for- fun street riding. The club annually sponsors multiple vintage events ; PVR is the sponsor of the AHRMA North Atlantic vintage motocross and cross country series. The club also promotes trials events in the Mid-Atlantic Trials series and annually sponsors a road ride through the Virginia countryside. PVR also is the sponsor of a January vintage motorcycle swap meet in York, PA, one of the largest indoor events of its kind. Its membership roster extends throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. PVR meets monthly for business and socializing, alternating between Maryland and Virginia with occasional social events in neighboring states. New members always welcome.

Museum will feature PVR bikes in History of Motocross Exhibit

An exhibit exploring the history of motocross racing in the U.S. opens at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs, PA, on Saturday, April 6th and will be on display through October.

The exhibit has been organized by the Potomac Vintage Riders, the region’s largest vintage motorcycle club. Though the sport had prospered in Europe for decades, the first motocross race for off-road motorcycles was not held in the United States until the late 1950s. Motocross racing involves a closed-course indoor or outdoor dirt track, often featuring tight turns, hills and jumps.

The exhibit explores the evolution of motocross bikes, from early European models – often converted from street-worthy motorcycles – to the purpose-built machines of the early 1980s. Other vintage off-road motorcycles – enduro, flat track and observed trials – also will be displayed. All of the motorcycles on display have competed in vintage events.

Among the featured bikes: 1960 Velocette Scrambler; 1958 BSA Gold Star; 1965 Ducati Scrambler; 1974 Honda CR 125 Elsinore; 1971 AJS Stormer and a 1981 Maico Wheelsmith 490. The exhibit also will feature a 1975 Kawasaki flat track bike that competes at Shippensburg (PA) Speedway.

The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, dedicated to the preservation of Northeastern racing history, is located at 100 Baltimore Road; York Springs, PA. The museum is open 10 AM until 4 PM, Friday through Sunday. Admission is free. Website: www.emmr.org.

The Potomac Vintage Riders is an enthusiasts’ club with members throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. PVR sponsors vintage motocross, cross country, trials and road events throughout the year. The club also sponsors an annual vintage motorcycle swap meet, auction and show, held in January at the York (PA) Expo Center.

(Advance press previews and interviews can be arranged by contacting the museum or the club. Photos of display bikes also are available.)
